Med-Surg Update
Course Overview

The doctor orders a BNP and you think he means BMP. You are caring for someone who just had gastric bypass surgery and his heart rate is 120. Someone tells you that a blood pressure of 120/80 is no longer normal. What does all of this mean and what are you going to do about it?

The practice of medical/surgical nursing has changed drastically in recent years and continues to evolve. Re-engineering in hospitals, rising healthcare costs and the prevalence of managed care has caused patients to be admitted only when seriously ill and to be discharged much more quickly. This has turned the med/surg nurse into a patient care manager with greater responsibilities than in the past. Additionally, keeping up with very rapidly evolving technology, equipment and treatments is a major challenge for the modern nurse. This 40-hour course is designed to provide the participant with the necessary foundational knowledge to confidently market yourself in this tough environment.

If you are someone who has been out of the medical field or out of clinical practice for a while and you need to be updated and informed about upcoming developments, then this is the course for you. Each day we will review body systems, introducing new information as we go along. We will bring you up to date on new medications and what they are being used for. We will cover the dos and don’ts of the latest documentation procedures. We will discuss ethical issues such as DNR, living wills and healthcare surrogates. So come join us for an exciting and information-packed week.

Some of the Objectives Include:

  1. Demonstrate detailed knowledge of anatomy and physiology of each body system.
  2. Discuss the principles of pre-and post- operative care.
