Introduction to Critical Care Nursing
Course Overview
The modern hospital is rapidly becoming one large critical care unit. In these days of health care reform and cost containment, nurses must have sophisticated nursing skills to remain competitive in the workplace. Through lecture, discussion, audio-visuals, and equipment demonstration, this 64-hour program will address the theoretical concepts needed to begin a preceptorship in the critical care unit. The course curriculum was developed by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses and follows a modular systems approach to include:
- Cardiovascular
- Pulmonary
- Neurological
- Renal
- Gastrointestinal
- Endocrine
- Hematological
- Multisystem Disorders
- Review of Systems
- Psychosocial
Some of the Objectives Include:
- Differentiate normal from abnormal findings when assessing the cardiovascular system.
- Describe the clinical manifestations of angina and MI.
- Demonstrate knowledge of judicious nursing practice regarding titration of intravenous vasoactive drugs.
- Outline the clinical presentation and assessment of patients in hypovolemic, distributive, and cardiogenic shock.
- Given case studies, interpret acid base abnormality, identify potential causes, and suggest treatment modalities.
- List the indications for intubation and mechanical ventilation.
- Identify the treatment modalities used in the management of acute pancreatitis and hepatic failure.
- Describe the modes of renal replacement and indications for each mode.
- Describe the management of the patient with increased ICP.
- Identify the lab values that are indicative of Disseminated Intravascular Coagulation (DIC).
Who Should Attend:
- Nurses who wish to work in the following critical care environments: ICU, CCU, Telemetry, Stepdown, PACU
- Nurses inactive for 1 or more years who wish to return to practice.
The course fee is $450 for 64 Contact Hours and includes the participant handout “Orientation to the Care of the Acute and Critically Ill Patient, 2nd Edition” by the American Association of Critical Care Nurses.
